The Nine Commandments of the Moso Nation in China

MOso or Mosuo - a people living at the junction of the provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan in the Lugu Lake region in China. Today, a short story about the nine commandments of the people "Na", as they call themselves.

Of course, some of these commandments are due to the peculiarities of the cultural development of the Moso and their traditional beliefs in nature as the highest power in the world. However, others are international and, in my opinion, have a timeless essence. However, decide for yourself and be sure to read the article "The Moso people - a society of women's rule in China". Ancient religion of the Mosuo people Daba is closely connected and intertwined with the ancient Dongba religion of the Naxi people. That's why there are so many similarities and even identical things in them.

1. Don't write Dongba characters on the ground. Do not throw away or step on Dongba scriptures, calligraphy, images of gods, offerings to gods. Store them properly or burn them in an incense burner. The other attitude is an insult to the dignity of the Na people.

(Dongba is an ancient writing system, mainly pictographic pictures, and mixed hieroglyphic writing. Note by the author).

2. In the religious shrines of Dunba, one cannot swear, whistle, quarrel. Also, you can not make noise, laugh out loud and fight. The same applies to behavior at the religious ceremonies of Dunba, in the temple or in front of the statues of the gods. Disrespect for the gods is the biggest taboo for the people of Na. If you do not respect the gods, then you can bring disaster on yourself and cause a real catastrophe.

(Dunba is a caste of priests of the Bon religion of some small peoples of China, such as the Naxi and Moso. Author's note).

3. Do not throw garbage and other waste into the incense burner. The incense burner was given to the people of Na to burn incense and worship the gods. If you use the incense burners in any way, the gods will be angry.

4. When you come to the mouth of the source god, you should burn incense to worship the gods of nature. Every human breath, every sip of water, every piece of food is given to us by nature. If you do not respect the gods of nature, the consequences can be dire.

5. Do not harm frogs, snakes, dogs and other animals. Na people don't want to look at it. The incarnation of the gods is different.

6. You can not pour dirty water into springs or springs, wash dirty and bloody things in them. Water is the source of life. Destroying water and forests is no different than destroying the lives of the Na people.

7. You must not sit on the doorstep, pour water on the house fire, step over the hearth of the house, or quarrel at the hearth. When the hearth of the house burns, the family prospers. Elders do not tolerate family disunity, and elders should be honored and listened to.

(The classical wooden house of the Na people suggests an open hearth located in the center of a large room on the ground floor. Note by the author).

8. At the entrance to the house of the Na family, the wooden beam of the opening was not made high and even low. The home must be respected. You should "see the forest and bow your head", otherwise you will have a well-deserved "touch".

9. You must give way and help when meeting the old, the weak, the sick and the disabled. If you unfortunately become one of them, you will receive the same treatment from other Na people.

This is all. Simple, a little childish, a lot of religion, but still correct in essence ...
