How I ate a dog in Sulawesi. Be careful in Indonesia

HI don’t really want to remember this case in particular, but it’s still nice to remember Indonesia as a whole ... As I recently turn on the TV, and there is a program on, something like “Planet of Travel”. Show the tropical jungle, natives, their villages. I look and think - it's very similar to Sulawesi. And then the host says that this is Sulawesi. Cool, I found out!

We flew to Sulawesi one night in August in a red Malaysian Airbus. And there is such a thing going on ... full moon. Almost a holiday. Everywhere red and white flags hang like Christmas decorations. It was late, we traveled without a clear plan, but we knew that we would not be lost.

The north of the island of Sulawesi is predominantly Christian, in general there are plenty of Catholic churches there. We, as naive people who are looking for adventure and believe in the goodness of the church, were asked to spend the night in a couple of them, but it was not there. Good pastors with a meek but firm look politely declined all our requests.

And then, in the third church in a row, we stumbled upon a praying Chinese who, having heard our request, offered us a hotel room nearby, for a purely nominal fee. He said that it was God himself who sent him travelers during prayer so that the prayer would do a good deed. Well, maybe it was.

The next day, a Chinese man and his girlfriend were invited to have breakfast with them in “in a cafe with excellent food and reasonable prices”. Naturally, we agreed to this proposal. The cafe reminded me of a self-service canteen.

Pretty hungry, I decided to have a full breakfast and got myself meat from nickel-plated trays in which various dishes were located. I added pasta with vegetables to the plate and ended up with a decent dish.

Breakfast was held in a warm friendly atmosphere. I would say in an atmosphere of mutual trust that can arise between Catholic Chinese living on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia and semi-atheist Russian tourists.

Breakfast ended with a cup of chic luwak coffee, which is harvested from the excrement of the civet marten. Just at that moment, I asked my new friend:

Friend, what was this meat that so appetizing and quickly killed my morning hunger?

To my simple question (weird, why didn't I ask it BEFORE choosing my dish?), I got the same simple and concise answer:

Friend, the lighter meat that was on the plate at your right hand is pork, and the darker meat on the other side, you took it from the last tray, is dog meat.

For me, his statement came as a kind of shock ... I really love dogs, but I love to feed them and play with them, not eat them! Yes, the taste of dog meat was very spicy, I did not even understand the taste of meat.

The Chinese people of Manado said that this is their favorite delicacy. And the Chinese girl also said that she loves rats and cats, but she is indifferent to snakes - tasteless. What was her answer? For example, that I prefer chicken? Ok... Tastes don't argue, do they?

The guy with the girl threw us to the track and wished us a happy journey. The route ran along the Sulawesi Sea, along the coast of which we wandered quite a bit.

The Sulawesi Sea was dirty. The beaches are rocky. The water is warm at the top, but a cold current was felt inside. In addition to everything in the water, I was bitten by some kind of muck, after which my leg hurt for a long time ...

We hitchhiked south towards Gorontalo. Typical views of Sulawesi swept past us - palm trees, rivers, mountains and narrow winding mountain paths, and in front of my eyes a morning dog dish hung distinctly ...
