Chinese media reports first death from new virus

AT the height of the coronavirus pandemic in Europe, information was received from the official media about the death of one person in the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan from hantavirus (hantavirus , a virus spread by rodents. A man from Yunnan province died on Monday, March 23, while returning by bus to the eastern province of Shandong.

Hantaviruses are a family of viruses spread only by rodents that can cause various disease syndromes in humans worldwide. Infection with any type of hantavirus can cause certain specific diseases in humans.

Hantaviruses in the Americas are known as "New World" hantaviruses and can cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome - hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS).

Other hantaviruses, known as "Old World" hantaviruses, are found mainly in Europe and Asia and can cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome − hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS).

Each hantavirus serotype has specific rodent host species. The virus is spreading among people by airborne droplets through excretions in the urine, feces and saliva of animals, and less commonly from the bite of an infected rodent. The most well-known hantavirus in the United States that can cause HPS is the Sin Nombre (translated from Spanish as "nameless virus") spread by the deer mouse.

Is hantovirus disease deadly? Yes. HPS and HFRS can be a fatal disease. The death rate is 38%.

In Chile and Argentina, the rarest cases of transmission of the virus from person to person who had close contact were recorded. In all cases, the patients were infected with a rather rare type of hantavirus called Andes. No other cases were recorded. That is Hantavirus cannot be transmitted from person to person. Contact with rodents is the only known risk of infection.

The hantavirus report comes as China is currently fighting the coronavirus, which has killed 3,277 people in the country, mostly in its epicenter, Hubei Province and its capital, Wuhan.

Meanwhile, the number of coronavirus deaths worldwide stood at 16,961, according to multiple reports. More than 386,350 reported cases have been reported in 175 countries and territories since the outbreak of the pandemic in China in December.

Many Americans were leaving Europe in a hurry, but despite the partial lifting of restrictive quarantine measures, it seems to be too early to go on vacation to China.
