Americas
Two large continental blocks lying in the western hemisphere are united by one common name - America. The larger one, with an area of 24.2 million km2, is located entirely in the Northern Hemisphere - this is North America, the third largest continent on Earth. A slightly smaller block of 17.8 million km2 crosses the equator and most of the continent is in the southern hemisphere, which is why we call it South America. Both continents are connected by a land "bridge" with the narrowest point in the Strait of Panama, 46 km wide.
The second "bridge" consists of archipelagos of islands stretching to the east of the Caribbean Sea. The largest of them are the Great Antilles. For several centuries they were called the Western Indies because the first exploratory expeditions to reach them believed that it was India.
America is the country with the greatest meridional extent. Extreme points in the north and south are more than 15 thousand km. This forms a wide variety of climatic, plant, soil and landscape zones. From the east, America is washed by the Atlantic Ocean, from the west by the Pacific. The northern coast of North America is washed by the waters of the Arctic Ocean.
Linguistic and cultural diversity is associated with the history of the colonization of America. Rio Grande - today the border between Mexico and the United States forms the "inland border" of America, with English and Spanish predominating with Portuguese.
Dominican Republic, Mexico, USA, Canada, Jamaica, Chile and many more countries - all this is America. America is different and different. Get to know America and travel with the site Travel Guide.
