China
Republic of China is one of the largest countries in the world. This in itself is the reason why it is worth visiting this country. The fascinating culture and history of the country, as well as its geographical diversity is sure to captivate you. Few countries have such a contrast between huge, bustling metropolitan areas and quiet towns.
More than 17 million people live in the country's capital, Beijing. The word Beijing means the northern capital. Due to various conquests and dynastic changes, Beijing has not always been the capital. Throughout its history, the capital has been known by names such as Ji, Yanjing, Youzhou, Zhongdu, Dadu, and Beiping.
The mountainous regions occupy the western part of the country, so the population is concentrated in the east. The western part of the country includes Tibet and the mighty Himalayas with the highest peak on Earth - Everest - 8850 m above sea level, and in the north-west of China there are the Tien Shan and Pamir mountains. In turn, the lowest point in China is a depression in the Turfan Basin - located in the northwestern part of the country - 154 m below sea level.
China is dominated by the Han nationality (1.2 billion people, which is 91% of China's population). In addition to it, there are 55 more nationalities, the so-called national minorities.
China is a truly huge country with many distinctive cultural areas, which, despite their diversity, allow Cathay to remain a single country with common values and spiritual heritage.
